Typeface trailer
1Today, nearly all graphic designers work on computers, typography is digital, most students in graphic design schools never used or never crafted a real type with their hands.
Maybe that’s probably the difference today, between a good graphic design school and a bad one, in the bad one they will probably use only a computer and never work with their hands, wich i think it’s really wrong. I was lucky enough to be at a good school and learn how to hand craft type.
I know it’s a pain to hand craft a letter and you can cut yourself very badly and even end up in the hospital if you’re not careful but it’s just great to work with these once you’ve got them.
You will probably say to me “What’s the point on crafting a letter when you can type it in your computer in one second…” It just won’t be the same, i don’t know how to explain it but computers will not give the same results, and they will look the same as other people’s work. It’s not like computers are useless, they are quite useful actually… but so little designers still do things the old fashioned way that their work just look different…
So when i saw the trailer for the “Typeface” film i felt like i really want to watch it. The premiere is January 29, 2010.
The film was done at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum, where there is still old fashioned type craftmen.

Letterpress coasters making of
0Ever wondered how to do your own custom coaster with your logo on it? You know…the thick thing where you put your glass in a bar so you don’t wet the table…
Repeat Press of Somerville made some really cool custom letterpress coasters for Selectism and Highsnobiety.
They recorded all the process from A to Z and i never thought it took so much time to do and i guess they really have a lot of patience!
I like the type on it :)
